I started listening to podcasts back in 2017 after a friend recommended I check them out. I had never really heard about them before, at least because no one around me was talking about them, but I immediately fell in love with the idea of them and have been an avid podcast-listener ever since. Fast-forward to today, everyone is constantly talking about their favourite podcasts and episodes, and more and more channels constantly pop! So I wanted to compile a list of my favourite channels (some I've listened to since 2017 and some more recently), so that you can gain all the value and insights about so many different topics that I have too! (All podcast channels will be linked in their names!)
Venetia La Manna
Although I'm listing these in no particular order, I have to say I'm putting Venetia's podcasts at the top of my list because there is not one episode of hers that I haven't listened to and I've learned something new and fascinating from every single one. Her delivery is so engaging, meaningful and unscripted which I absolutely love and the topics she covers are very wide ranging (mainly based around sustainability and food but not always) but also super relevant to everyone and our daily lives. She recently ended her Talking Tastebuds podcast after 6 series and very recently started All The Small Things to expand and diverge a little from the Talking Tastebuds topics and talk more broadly about daily habits as well as what rituals and small things "keep them in-check". I can't wait to listen to her upcoming episodes (which she posts every Tuesday) as I know I'll love all of them.
Ryan Nicodemus and Joshua Fields Millburn
I'm sure most podcasts listeners have at least heard or listened to an episode by The Minimalists. They're iconic podcasters, having started their podcast over 5 years ago, and have since released 2 Netflix documentaries; Minimalism and Less is Now. They now have almost 300 episodes all based around minimalism, and the notion of "living a meaningful life with less". I really like the structure and routine of the podcast even though it definitely feels like an honest conversation between the two hosts alone or with their guest(s). The subjects that they cover really shed light on all areas of our lives and give truly practical and reasonable methods or things to think about when it comes to minimalism. They definitely emphasise how individualistic it all is and don't like to prescribe anything that is meant to tell you exactly how to do it. Their episodes are released every Tuesday and I'm always super intrigued about what topic they are going to talk about each week!
Ella & Matthew Mills
Fun fact, Deliciously Ella's cookbook was actually the first vegan cookbook I ever got, back in 2015! She has definitely been one of the pioneers in the more mainstream plant-based, wellness world, and for a very good reason. She makes the lifestyle super realistic and even more importantly, so delicious!! So when her podcast first came out a couple years back, I knew I was in for a treat. She currently has 7 series out and often has her husband as her co-host and they make the perfect duo! Her guests are always super inspiring, and come from a range of backgrounds, since the topics covered are wide ranging as well. Some of my favourites that I've listened to so far are:
Series 1: "Food Waste and Climate Change", "Matt Haig on Mental Health"
Series 3: "Livia Firth on Sustainable Fashion", "Period Power", "Why we Sleep with Matthew Walker"
Series 4: "Do we need a Digital Detox?"
Series 5: "Eco-Anxiety and the healing power of nature", "10 ways to de-stress your life"
Grace Kingswell
The one thing I like about Grace Kingswell and her State of Mind podcast is that she's definitely not afraid to talk about controversial topics and a wide range of topics with really interesting guests. Although a recent one, her podcast on plant milks and how the oils that are in so many of them can be really harmful to our health, has definitely grabbed a lot of people's attention. Although there are some thing that I might not agree with her on, her podcast has definitely taught me a lot and has made me explore different topics that I'd never thought about before - always a good sign!
Simon Hill
Although Simon's podcast explores a variety of subjects like climate change, agriculture, medicine etc. he is definitely mostly focused on evidence-based nutrition with a plant-based diet. I think I have actually been one of Simon's OG listeners, so I feel like I've gone on this journey with him in a weird way, but I have to say, he has some of the most inspiring and informative guests and the research he puts into his podcasts is really mind-blowing. As someone who has suffered with GI issues, his podcast episodes with Dr. Will Bulsiewicz have literally helped me so much. So I definitely recommend browsing his feed to find an episode that seems interesting to you, but rest-assured, you will definitely learn something fascinating listening to any of them!
Jared Blumenfeld
This podcast is a really distinct one because the host, Jared Blumenfeld, essentially interviews people and goes to places all over the world and discusses topics, people or places and somehow relate them all back to the earth and environment. He talks about subjects in such an engaging and different way, with such interesting people, that it makes you have such a great appreciation for the world and all the diversity that it contains. At the same time though, he reminds us just how fragile our world is but also gives us hope about how we can make a difference, which is something so many of us need today.
Dr Margaret Rutherford
Dr Rutherford is a psychologist who has been in practice for over 25 years and her podcast is something that I know I can fall back on whenever I need some kind of support or guidance or just reassurance about how I'm feeling and everything in between. She talks through topics that you never knew how to express verbally and she really makes you feel peace and comfort within yourself, it almost feels like you're in a very productive therapy session when listening to her podcast, just without you responding back! She has over 200 episodes, so everyone is bound to find at least one that resonates deeply with them.
NPR
From the intricate history of Puerto Rico to The Litter Myth, throughline explores the past and relevant topics in order to help us understand the present better. I see the podcast almost as the history classes we never had, and they're super interesting as well. Some subjects that they talk about I never even knew had a history, and every time I finish an episode, I almost feel like an expert in that topic! It really allows you to have a greater appreciation for the present world and well as the past and how everything connects and has played a part into what we now call our modern world.
Ted Talks
I think we've all listened to or watched a Ted Talk at some point, so Ted Talks Daily are daily podcast episodes averaging from around 5 to 15 minutes on a specific topic, just like a normal Ted Talk. There is every topic you can think of and when a new big phenomenon or technology or anything new comes out, it is very likely Ted Talks Daily will share a podcast on it! The fact that it's both daily and very succinct is super refreshing because you can literally learn about something new very easily every single day. This is one podcast that I know everyone will find something they'll like, so it's definitely worth subscribing to!
